Disability and Work: A Persistent Gap

Employment numbers for people with disabilities have been stagnant since the late 1980's. This, despite the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, which sought to break down barriers to employment and recreation for the disabled. This three-part series explores the problems that people with disabilities face in getting and keeping jobs.

High-Stakes Testing

Testing has become a big part of New York City education – with high stakes for students, schools and politicians. Test scores are up, but opponents say the pressure on kids is too great and the emphasis on testing is forcing real learning to the sidelines.
Appalachian Missionaries

Missionaries are often seen as people who go overseas to spread their religion. But in one chapter of American history, between 1880 and 1940, thousands of Christian missionaries in America went to a region that seemed like as foreign land inside the U.S. – Appalachia. I talked with my great aunt, who arrived in Eastern Kentucky as a missionary before World War II. And I found that missionaries are still there today, addressing the problems of poverty and drug addiction in new ways.
